Map

Ely is a Medieval Cathedral City in the heart of The Fenlands, founded in the year 673 and named after the Eels found in the surrounding waters! Ely is situated in the district of East Cambridgeshire, on the A10 between Cambridge and King’s Lynn.

Ely is famous for its cathedral that towers across the fens for miles around, dominating the skyline. It’s one of England's largest cathedrals and the octagon within the cathedral is the only gothic dome in the world. The cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to Stained Glass!

Ely is one of the smallest cities in England after being officially recognised as one in 1974. Its picturesque centre is populated by historic buildings and winding shopping streets and the river is a popular boating area with a large marina.

There is a fine selection of shopping on offer with both independent retailers and national chains, plus a fine selection of cafe’s, pubs and restaurants.

Ely is a major railway junction and National Express operate train services to a wide variety of local and national destinations including Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street.

By road, Ely is close to the A11, A14, A1/A1(M) and M11; Stansted and Cambridge airports are a short drive or train ride away making it easily accessible for commuters, business travellers and as a tourist destination.
