Map
The city of Gloucester is dominated by its wonderful Cathedral that can trace its history back over 1300 years.
Gloucester is a historic port and the wharfs, warehouses and the docks themselves underwent an extensive renovation in the 1980s. Some warehouses now house the National Waterways Museum, others were converted into shops and bars and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum is located in the Custom House. The port still houses the most inland RNLI lifeboat in the UK!
The Kings Walk Shopping Centre includes major national retailers as well as small independent shops and Gloucester’s indoor market in Eastgate Street which opened in 1968, is well worth a visit.
Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet opened in 2009 and is within easy walking distance of the city centre. This was built adjacent to the Peel centre complex which includes retail outlets as well as a cinema.
Good transport links with the rail and motorway networks (M5 and M4) make the likes of Cheltenham, Bristol, Swindon and Cardiff easily commutable. Gloucester railway station is run by First Great Western and offers services to London Paddington in less than two hours.
Gloucester is has a wide range of leisure facilities including the GL1 Leisure Centre with its complex of four swimming pools, Horizon Health and Fitness with it’s state of the art gym and Oxstalls Tennis Centre, Gloucestershire's premier indoor tennis facility.
Gloucester Rugby have been playing top level Rugby Union at Kingsholm since 1891 and it was once home to England’s national team before they settled at Twickenham. Gloucester are a formidable force in the English Premiership and at European level.
