Nuneaton

Map

Nuneaton is the largest town in Warwickshire and has been in the council borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth since the neighbouring councils were merged in April 1974 and is said to be the most central town in England.

Nuneaton is located between the A5 and the M6 and M69 motorways and is also an important rail junction on the West Coast Main Line, offering travel to many destinations including local and commuter trains to Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester and London.

Nuneaton's name came from a 12th century Benedictine Nunnery (parts of which still survive) from which around much of the town grew. Prior to this it was a settlement known as 'Etone', thought to mean 'small settlement by a river'. A market was established in 1233 (and is still held today). The first recorded use of the modern name was in 1247 when a document recorded it as 'Nonne Eton'.

Nuneaton has continued to evolve and The Bermuda Park development has brought a mix of local amenity and leisure facilities including North Warwickshire & Hinckley College's Innovation Centre, a multiplex cinema, ten-pin bowling alley, gym and a number of popular restaurant chains.

Another major development was the multi-million pound Ropewalk Shopping Centre which opened in September 2005, giving the town extra income and revitalising the town centre.

The major football team in the town is Nuneaton Borough and there are three Rugby Union teams: Nuneaton RFC (The Nuns), Nuneaton Old Edwardians (The Eds) and Manor Park.

There are many Leisure Centres in the town. The Pingles Leisure Centre was rebuilt in 2004 and includes indoor and outdoor swimming areas, saunas, a dance studio and gym. There is also an associated athletics stadium - the Pingles Stadium - which has a seated stand and is also used as a football ground.

Nuneaton is rich in history and is most famous for its associations with the 19th century author George Eliot, born on a farm on the Arbury Estate just outside Nuneaton in 1819. She lived in the town for much of her early life. In fiction, Nuneaton is referred to as "Milby" in the George Eliot novel Scenes of Clerical Life (1858).
