The waterfront city of Portsmouth is situated on the south coast of the UK in the county of Hampshire and is unique in being the UK’s only island city.
Portsmouth is renowned for its naval history and its historic dockyard is home to famous ships such as HMS Warrior and HMS Victory. As well as being the UK’s principal naval port, Portsmouth International Port is one of Britain’s best-connected ferry ports with easy access and the most routes to France, Spain and the Channel Islands.
A recent addition the Portsmouth’s skyline is The Spinnaker Tower which is part of a recently redeveloped area of retail outlets, restaurants and bars known as Gunwharf Quays.
More shopping is on offer at the Cascades Shopping Centre with its wide range of high street and speciality shops. The city centre also has a traditional pedestrianised shopping district, offering a variety of shops and a street market every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Following a £20million investment, the Mountbatten Leisure Centre’s facilities include a 50m swimming pool, 400m athletics track, outdoor cycling velodrome, 150 station gym and health suite.
The M275 motorway serves Portsmouth and links to the UK road network via the M27, A3 and A27.
Portsmouth has four train stations: Portsmouth & Southsea, Portsmouth Harbour, Fratton and Hilsea, all operated by South West Trains and offering rail links nationwide.
