Weston Super Mare

Map

The charming town of Weston-super-Mare is the largest seaside resort in Somerset. The wide sweep of Weston Bay has miles of clean sandy beach, a level promenade with stunning views over the Bristol Channel to Wales and offers all the traditional seaside attractions, including its famous donkeys!

Weston beach has designated areas for wind and water sports and there are boat trips around Weston Bay. The beach also hosts Weston’s Sand Sculpture Festival and the famous Weston Beach Race.

Situated on the M5 makes Weston-super-Mare an ideal commuter base. Bristol, Portishead, Bridgwater, Exeter and Taunton are within easy reach.

Early visitors rented rooms or a whole house from local people (and we’re proud to continue that tradition!) and the first hotel was opened in 1810 and is part of what is now the Royal Hotel. The Seafront Improvement Scheme of the 1880s provided the sea walls and a promenade stretching for two miles. In 1904 the Grand Pier opened with a large theatre offering all the top music hall acts.

The Grand Pier was closed in July 2008 following a fire that destroyed its pavilion. The pier was reopened in October 2010 having undergone a spectacular £39m transformation. The pier now boasts the UK's first laser maze and the only double one in the world. The biggest ride is a 300m electric floor pick-up go-kart track, which is the only one of its kind in the UK.

Other local attractions include the world’s largest dedicated helicopter museum (with more than 50 aircraft from around the world), the SeaQuarium and the North Somerset Museum. There is a wide variety of entertainment on at the Playhouse Theatre and the Winter Gardens plus and an excellent selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs.
